Uri Zfat Law Office

U

ri Zfat Law Office is Israel’s preeminent

expert on family law and all inheri-

tance matters, divorce, custodian-

ship and more. With expertise in negotiation

and mediation, he graduated courses at Harvard

Law School. During his 38 years as a lawyer,

Uri Zfat has handled the most complex divorce

cases and wills through a unique combination

of legal understanding and know-how, major

experience and legal tactics. He also offers

extensive expertise in contesting wills and all

aspects of inheritance matters, managing and

dividing estates.

Shaping Israeli Family Law

Uri Zfat has a great knowledge of family law and

inheritance law and is helping to shape a new

legislation. He serves as the Co-Chairman of the

Israel Bar Association Inheritance Committee and

Co-Chairman of the National Rabbinical Courts

Committee, and he is a former Chairman of the Tel

Aviv District Family Law Committee and Chairman

of the Rabbinical Courts Committee. He is the

official representative of the Israel Bar Associa-

tion on matters of Family Law, for the Knesset

Constitutional, Law and Legal Committee, , and

attends debates on proposed new legislation

and amendments. In this manner, he is able to

personally contribute to the legislative and demo-

cratic process and the overall texture of Israeli

family law. Among the topics to which he was

a party in legislation in the Knesset committee

are the important amendment (number 4) to the

Relation of Assets Law for couples, mutual wills,

the authority of rabbinical courts, various pro-

tocols and more. Israel’s newspaper and radio

editors and Internet sites frequently ask Uri Zfat

to contribute responses and op-ed articles on

new or fundamental legal matters from a legal

perspective. He wrote and edited the Israel Bar

Association’smonthly newsletter on family law –

Et VeMishpacha. He is a lecturer in legal practice

in estates at ShaaryMishpat College and Bar Ilan

University Academic Center. Uri Zfat participated

in the “professional know-how enrichment proj-

ect,” in which leading lawyers in the sector met

with young lawyers to advise and instruct them

and consider topics together thus contributing

to the community.

After graduating from the Nahalim Orthodox

Yeshiva high school and serving in the army as

a professional soldier and in the reserves as a

criminal investigator, Uri Zfat received an LL.B.

from Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Law and

has been a member of the Israel Bar Associa-

tion since 1977, when he opened his own law

firm. He has graduated from special courses at

Harvard LawSchool for managing negotiators and

for mediation. Uri Zfat is an authorized mediator

in family law.

Over the years, Uri Zfat lectured and taught Family

and Inheritance Law in institutions such as the

School for Welfare Officials, Rabbinical Claims

Institute, universities and colleges. He conducts

certificatory training at the Israeli Bar, directs

judicial conventions and promotes family law

studies among college students. He lectures at

training courses, seminars, conferences and in

the college of the Israel Bar, and on the same

subject, examines interns for the Bar and serves

as a Judge in its Disciplinary Court. He is the ac-

ademic coordinator for seminars in family law

and inher-itance law at Bar Ilan University and

lectured in the past on inheritance law at Shaary

Mishpat College.

Following the murder of 11 members of Israel’s

Olympic squad by PLO terrorists in Munich in

1972, Uri Zfat was called upon as an expert wit-

ness in the German courts in a claim for child

support by the orphans of the slain athletes. He

has also given professional opinions to the courts

on professional negligence in agreements drawn

up by lawyers on family matters and wills.

Legal Precedents

Uri Zfat acts on the cutting edge of family law

and has been involved in winning numerous

legal-precedent decisions for his clients. These

fundamental verdicts encompass many topics

such as partnership practice between couples,

child support, dividing property, wills and

trusts, Supreme Court petitions and more. He

is involved in appeals to the Supreme Court and

High Rabbinical Court, in which he has been

involved inmany important halachic rulings, and

many of the landmark rulings that he has won

are now taught as text-book cases to students in

the country’s universities and colleges.

encompass all areas of family law. He regularly

appears before all the country’s courts includ-

ing the Supreme Court as well as the Rabbinical

Supreme Court and the rabbinical courts. He has

a profound understanding of Jewish law and hala-

cha as well as Israeli civil law.

Divorce and Inheritance Disputes:

In addition

to litigation, he successfully negotiates and

mediates in divorce, inheritance, property, ad-

ministration of estates, assets and jointly held

businesses; asset agreements; prenuptial and

cohabitation agreements; property and heirs

division agreements.

Wills& Estates:

Drawing up wills, executing wills,

legal managing of contesting wills, investigating

medical specialists, handling bequests, distribu-

tion, appealing over inheritance etc.

Mediation, Arbitration and Negotiation:

Uri Zfat

has successfully managed many mediations, ar-

bitration and negotiations using his know-how

and experience in the sector.
