COOP Israel

C

OOP Israel is the leading consumer co-

operative in Israel, operating the third

largest food chain in Israel’s residen-

tial neighborhoods, under the brand names

‘COOP Shop’, ‘COOP Shop Extra’ and ‘COOP

Shop Village’. Our stores offer the ultimate and

affordable shopping experience, according to

the needs of the customer. The COOP experi-

ence includes our Fresh meat, Fresh cheese,

and Fresh fruits and vegetables Departments,

as well as a wide variety of food products; pas-

try shops; pharmacy; toiletries; cleaning; and

dozens of other goods at fixed and low prices,

with hundreds of special promotions every day,

making any purchase at our branches both en-

joyable and worthwhile.

Background

The COOP was founded in Jerusalem in 1939 as

a cooperative association in the food sector. In

1942 it began operating neighborhood grocery

stores, forming the historic basis of the chain.

The Cooperative expanded its activities over

the years, acquiring various small retail chains

and consolidating its position as a leading retail

chain nationwide.

COOP Israel Nowadays

Currently, COOP Israel has 15,000 active mem-

bers and 1,100 employees all over the country.

One million customers shop in COOP Israel

stores each month. The chain’s sales turnover

amounts to NIS 1 billion per year. As of today,

COOP Israel operates over 210 Points of Sale,

via 3 cross-country sub-chains:

• COOP Shop –

A chain of 42 neighborhood

grocery stores.

• COOP Shop in the Village –

A chain of over 160

franchise stores in rural areas.

• COOP Shop Extra –

A chain of about 7 grocery

stores located at the outskirts of major cities.

Planning Ahead

COOP Israel keeps growing, opening new stores,

operating an advanced logistics center, region-

al distribution centers and a fleet of trucks for

self-distribution. New members are joining the

cooperative society as the company strives to

lower costs in residential neighborhoods and

the Periphery, all-the-while without harming the

shopping experience.

International relations

COOP Israel is amember of several international

organizations:

• The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)

• The European Cooperative Organization - Co-

operative Europe.

• The European Community of Consumer Coop-

eratives - Euro COOP.

• Consumers Cooperatives Worldwide (CCW).

In the framework of its international activity,

COOP Israel represents the State of Israel in

several European working groups, which influ-

ence central organizations such as the European

Union. COOP Israel is strengthening both dip-

lomatic relations and business relations with

global cooperatives, active in fields such as im-

port and export of goods and services, as well as

stopping and preventing boycotts against Israel.

COOP Israel is also active within the International

Co-operative Alliance.

COOP Israel – A Cooperative Society with True

Cooperative Values

COOP Israel is unique within the retail sector

because of its identity: as a democratic coopera-

tive organization, working for the benefit of our

members and customers, and fully committed to

the Cooperative Values, we stand out from other

commercial companies and businesses, which

operate only to create profit for their sharehold-

ers. COOP Israel is governed by democratically

elected institutions. Elections to the Assembly,

Board andSecretariat are held every 4 years, with

each cooperative member holding one, equal

vote. The professional management of COOP Is-

rael answers to these democratic institutions.

Cooperative Values, Community Involvement,

Female Empowerment, Workers Welfare

COOP Israel began as a small neighborhood

community grocery store named COOP Jerusa-

lem. This community spirit remains to this day,

and is expressed in our cooperative vision, which

combines social and solidarity goals, alongside

commercial retail objectives, both domestic and

international. As a consumer cooperative, com-

munity values are the cornerstone of our identity,

and COOP Israel annually contributes to various

associations and community initiatives. COOP

Israel works in cooperation with the commu-

nities in which its stores are located, through

community centers, municipalities and local

councils. Over 52% of COOP Israel’s employees

are women, holding a wide variety of positions,

from head cashiers and store managers, to our

VP and legal advisor. Although the retail sector

is generally a tough, male-dominated field, the

chain is considered a standard bearer of female

empowerment. Another strength of COOP Israel

is its care for the wellbeing of its personnel. The

chain operates a wide array of employee benefits

and support, providing its workers with an ever-

expanding umbrella of services, including short

vacations, scholarships, loans, and more.
